Choosing the Right Shopify Migration Path

Sadaf Jehan · July 21, 2026

Every platform migration onto Shopify starts the same way in the brief and ends differently in practice, because the source platform’s data model rarely maps cleanly onto Shopify’s. Variants, customer accounts, and order history each behave differently on WooCommerce, Magento, BigCommerce, Wix, Squarespace and Salesforce Commerce Cloud.

The single highest-risk step is the URL redirect plan, and it has to exist before a single page moves — not after. A migration that reshuffles URLs without a mapped 301 plan can lose years of accumulated search equity in a weekend.

Product variants are the most common data-model mismatch. Platforms that model options differently from Shopify’s variant system need an explicit mapping pass before import, or the result is a catalog that looks migrated but behaves wrong at checkout.

The theme build should come last, not first. Building the receiving theme before the data model and redirect plan are settled means rebuilding templates twice.
